Strahan Timber - Banksia Nut
Banksia nuts are the fruit of a small tree that grows in the remote deserts of Western Australia. Banksia wood is reddish in color with an attractive grain but it is rarely used as it warps badly on drying. It has large nuts that resemble "cones". These are commonly used for ornamental purposes in wood turning.
Much like walnut burl—Banksia Nuts turn beautifully to reveal swirling, speckled grain with beautiful patterned voids, great for ornaments and small vases! They are often sliced up and sold as drink coasters.
The nuts have been dried for years after harvesting, and have a hard, solid consistency, especially towards the center. They take excellent detail on the lathe, and the material is easy to turn, though a dust mask is recommended to protect against flying seed and dust.
Strahan Timber are a supplier of Banksia Nuts so come in store and check out the fantastic nut!
